AWSS Web ART & Design
So this is the first posting to my BLOG for the 2nd Semester Web Art & Design subject. I must say that after some initial confusion as to the focus or content of the subject I think I have a firmer context inwhich the focus of the subject is.
As an Design Computing student, the grounding of the teaching is stemmed in the concept of Design - as a directed, focused and structured process that has economical and purposeful intent - one defines ART as that which does not encompass these elements.
However, Gianni has discussed that ART must have an INTENT for ARTISTIC exploration!
Two things I consider - all art is a form of self expression and therefore is SELF PROMOTION! Consider that unless you are the ANON - you are self promoting your work! I think it is also over idealised to consider that ART does not have commercial intent A huge development in digital art and installation work is selling the work - how does one sell something that is digital and intangible - it is unlike a traditional Picasso or Pollack. How is its 'value' to be assessed to the individual and assessed over time? What happens to the art workif the medium/platform becomes extinct? Does it not decay and de-value over time?
Perhaps this concept could be the basis for my approach to SECURITY....security in digital or lack of ; it can be relied upon to decay and renew!
But I also think that defining websites will be very difficult. Many peoples intent when developing a website is for self promotion or product/service promotion. I am sure I will do fine justifying my choice.
Another idea I had was the SECURITY that may be found in the internet - the anonymity and comfort that comes from it...how many ppl hide in the net..get lost in it...re-invent themselves or adopt pseudonyms- 'isms' in that environment. Its a counter culture and allows people to explore a side of themselves or present themselves....in a secure and non-threatening environment...I find this interesting..particularly when u meet these people in person! I have had circumstances where the online persona is so different to the real life one. People look to different things - and the lack of sight - vision - and all the other 'hang ups' and/or limitations that come with this (sight, smell, body language, communication and interpretation).
Is what is written really WHAT is being said? The internet culture has developed ways of expressing meaning and 'building' in expression into text e.g. LOL. Acronyms of expression.
OK..so I will think more about this idea and endeavour to source websites that explore ART as the medium/focus - not necessarily the subject MATTER!
